A Fine Replacement for a Chemex
When my Chemex broke, my heart broke with it. I bought another Chemex and not a month later, via some freak accident, it developed a hairline crack that ended up totally shattering the thing a couple weeks later. Such is life. I couldn't justify forking over another $40, and also used that as an opportunity to realize that it was a huge pain in the neck finding filters for the thing. No one carried them in my area and even finding them on Amazon was a chore (I had to order from neat little cafes around the country), and they were really quite expensive.
While I do not like the reusable metal mesh filter on its own (the end result is a coffee that brews way too fast and has a more French Press-esque consistency), #2 filters fit in there just fine and my coffee game is back on point (Hario makes some good ones that cost half as much as the Chemex filters). SO, this thing costs about half as much as a Chemex, is sturdier, and makes coffee that is just as good with filters that cost half as much (or nothing at all if you're cool with the reusable one)!
