From a professional artist: A solid quality SCHOLASTIC grade of paper
I took a chance on this paper in spite of all the negativity I read in other reviews (not white enough, cockles with wet on wet, piling under the brush and so on). My conclusion after using a dozen sheets for fairly detailed studies? You could not reasonably expect anything better for this extremely low price. Scholastic grade watercolor paper purchased by the sheet can easily cost $2 PER SHEET. These come in at LESS than 1/10 of that cost! The paper is surprisingly very even in thickness (when held up to a light) for such a budget minded paper, and while it does begin to pill if you try to rework a wet area for very long I would say CLEARLY this paper isn’t intended for that sort of methodical, detailed reworking...if you want to do that, you need a paper that has been hard-sized...think of it this way: spend as much income per sheet as you intend to invest in painting it. Expecting cheap paper to be fantastic just means your setting yourself up for disappointment. I’ve done some minor lifting and isolated areas of wash with surprisingly satisfactory results. Is it my favorite paper or the best of worked on? Certainly not by any stretch of the imagination. Is it a decent surface for preliminary work, children and beginners? I’d say you won’t find anything remotely as good for those purposes anywhere near this price. It’s head and tails above what I’d expect for its cost. If you hate it, it doesn’t mean the paper is bad: most of the complaints relate to people who had unrealistic expectations and should have bought a more expensive paper with hard sizing. I’ve included a couple of sketches I’ve done on this paper. I’d buy it again.
