Great functionality and a very easy to use app, very quiet - but the cost of replacing the filter is obscene
I became interested in this fan for a couple of reasons. One is that it eliminates the major fail point of most of my other fans, the exposed rotary blade. Two, it's a three function item, in that it heats/cools, moves air, and functions as a purifier. I happen to be one of those people who gets easily annoyed by repetitive noises. I can easily deal with constant noises, but if there's a repetitive, irregular noise I go from relaxed to "primed and ready to do murder" in about five minutes. You can see why I've had a problem finding good fans for my house. Even with more expensive/better produced fans, there is almost always some degree of rotary noise from the motor, and as they age this tends to get more irregular and those more frustrating for me. The Dyson totally eliminates this. It makes a low, constant hum, and I have no problems with it. The mechanism may degrade over time and start annoying me, and if it does I will update this review. Secondly, I have two intrusive cats and two frequent visitors under the age of 8. My other fans are metal and you can imagine that I was a little concerned about having them anywhere that the animals or kids could get into trouble with them. For that cats that's pretty much anywhere. They're not stupid enough to get themselves into fan blades, but they do knock things over, and having a rotary fan fall on the floor while it's rotating is a recipe for disaster. This fan is great for the cats. They can enjoy the heat (if you have it on hot) or the cool breeze and since it's so heavily weighted towards the bottom and the base is nice and wide, there's no risk that they'll have an accident. The kids are likewise unable to stick their fingers into accessible blades. In terms of the basic functionality, I'm quite happy with it. It heats up immediately and puts out a good solid stream of airflow. As a cooling fan it is flawless. It has the oscillating feature that you'd expect from a standard fan as well. I also suffer from allergies (yes, and I still own cats... I'm a martyr to my inability to resist a cute animal, haha) and I appreciate that it has an air purifier. The app is straightforward and you can use it to set up the fan, or you can just use the nicely written and illustrated directions. I'm not sure that the fan is fully worth the price that Dyson is asking for it. I *like* its features, and I like that it reduces the amount of separate items that I'd need to have plugged into my wall, but it is just so expensive. And secondly, you have to buy replacement filters, which I haven't been able to find generic versions of, and that's going to tack on a RIDICULOUS $70 a pop for the rest of its life, if I want it to continue filtering. I might just give up on that after the first filter wears out. Update by request: I decided not to replace the filter after it wore out, approx 8 months. I am currently using it as a fan and heater.
