First impression not the best...
In my quest for shelf-stable carbs I found this bread-in-a-can and decided to buy a case because of the price. I opened it like a can of cranberry sauce and it popped out with no problem. I tasted it and my first impression was that it's a bland, dry, dense and somewhat waxy cake-like product. I was expecting a pumpernickel flavor but this lacks the grainy flavor of traditional bread. Well, I thought, it's not horrible and I would eat it in a pinch but I've got 12 cans of this so what can I do to make it better?
So I took the recommendations of those who said to toast and butter it. What a difference! The dry heat transformed it into something completely different- the waxy texture was replaced with a soft, almost delicate crumb and the butter seeped in and mellowed the flavor. It was actually very good and I'd have no problem eating this. If the power's out I may have to grill it but that would probably make it even better. Cream cheese? Probably better still.
Is this a bread to make a sandwich or to mop up gravy? Absolutely not. But is it a good toast substitute for breakfast or as a stand-alone snack item? Absolutely yes. It has earned a place in my pantry.
