3 year update - I still love this filter. Best pool upgrade I've done. See original review below. I upgraded to this filter from a 100sq.ft. cartridge filter that needed to be sprayed out, for about half an hour, every single weekend. This filter has superior water flow and goes over 2 months between backwashes. Better yet, backwashing takes less than 5 minutes and I don't get filthy or soaking wet while I do it! I did a lot of research on other filters before making the decision to go for sand. I know everyone talks about how many microns particles can be for different types of filters to remove them and sand is supposedly the worst. Many supporters of DE and cartridge stated something to the effect of "You'll never get that sparkling clean blue water with sand" because it's letting larger particles recirculate through the pool. After nearly a year of use, I'm very comfortable saying that my pool is just as sparkling blue as it's ever been. With less than a tenth the maintenance that it used to take my water is so clear that I can still tell you if a quarter is heads up or down in the deep end. One of the clinchers in my decision, and take this for whatever it's worth to you, I visit Disney World regularly and chatted up one of their pool maintenance specialists and was able to tour one of their pump rooms for a very large, 1/4 million gallon+, pool. They were using sand filters. He said because of the ease of maintenance. If it's good enough for the mouse, it's good enough for me.
