The Tide Has Turned
I never saw a roach in my NYC apartment for 20 years. About two years ago they tore up the garage and suddenly an influx. I literally saw one the size of my foot. (That is NOT poetic license. I've never seen it again, but I didn't re-enter my living room for a week so I didn't have to see it again. Left to their own devices they can grow to ENORMOUS size. Like a '50's horror movie size!)
Even though the landlord pays to have an exterminator come in two times a month (I have the super let the guy in even if I'm not home) it didn't make a dent. He spritzes, he uses the goo; they lay low for a while and come storming back. It would be helpful if the other 124 tenants in the apartment building cared as much as the other 6 tenants (me included) who let the guy in to do his thing. But they don't. I figure the little basterds just move next door and come back to my place when the heat cools down. Doesn't help that tenants on either side of me keep moving out and they re-paint the apartments. (The cockroach WILL inherit the earth. If only they contributed towards the rent...)
I've ordered DIY exterminator strength flushing sprays. Mop up floor stuff. My own goo. They work for a while. I am sad to say I will never be a Buddhist. I actually enjoy when I see the flushing sprays cause them pain. I think of the old J. Geils tune, "Serve you right to suffer!" But they return. Probably immune for future generations. (Did you know the egg pouch will let the little ones live even if Mom has bought the farm? They do! If you step on the little pencil eraser pouch you SPREND THEM!)
Finally at wits end I thought of my grandma's recipe for bug-free homes - boric acid. I searched on Amazon and here this was. I bought three and hired my sister to do deep cleaning and clutter removal. I said, nuke the kitchen, dust every draw, sprinkle every place the cats can't get too. Powder them back to the stone age!
Now I'm using my standing sweeper and dustbin - also purchased on Amazon - to scoot up their belly-up dead roach a$$es. Again, I'll never be Richard Gere. It makes me happy! I just re-ordered. Grandma was right. THIS stuff works! I've seen them stagger out from behind the sink covered in white dying and laugh. (I'm not proud.)
But be viligant! The cockroach has survived two ice ages and nuclear testing. They will be boogie-ing on my grave. They will be living here long after I'm gone. But for now I will settle for a DMZ.
PS - my cats are fine. They want nothing to do with this white stuff behind the counters they continue to jump on although they fully know it's not allowed.
