This is how it sounds.
It's difficult to describe how something sounds without actually hearing it, but as a musician and audio engineer, let me do my best for these headphones. I've used them in the quiet, on a plane, and a bus.
Here's the bottom line: If you are - say - a pianist, and you want your headphones to sound exactly like a piano should: you'll be disappointed. But, if you're hoping for a solid bass punch for fun, over-engineered pop music: these headphones will do just fine.
Actually, this headphone has two different sound qualities - Normal and Noise Cancelling. In the Normal Setting, the mid-bass is doubly over pronounced (like +10db @ 200hz)... it's a bit boomy, and on the upper end it lacks the crystal brite tones you'd get from a sugar-sweet Bose headphone, or the solid flat response of a Sony MDR. But on the whole, it's not annoying. If you like acoustic instrumentation and are a snob about what it should sound like, this headphone will fall short.
THEN you turn on the Noise Cancellation feature and it's a whole different sound. The ambient noise that you're trying to cancel out is dramatically reduced, but ONLY in the mid bass and below. The roar of the airplane will disappear in the Noise Hush, but not the intercommed safety demonstration. Noise Cancellation headphones in general don't do well removing high frequencies, but are quite good at removing low ones.
It's a long story as to why... BUT for the NoiseHush, the Noise Cancellation feature will increase the high frequency tones (like above 1000Hz) in your music to compensate for the high frequency ambient noise it cannot mask. It leaves the headphone sounding better on the high-end if somewhat brittle. Unfortunately it drains the battery a lot faster.
All told, it's a good portable headphone that is clear and loud. The biggest CON is this: the on/off button is one of the smallest, and if you can find it, it's a press and hold for five seconds.! Somebody should look in to that. Until then, I'm going to keep wearing these for travel and the gym, but not for serious listening snobbery.
Oh, and I had to buy these with real money. Nobody gave them to me so I would say nice things.
