Mold Detective Pump useful but send to lab doing x600 or x1000 magnification.
As a professional mold consultant (16 yrs - >2000 buildings) I was skeptical this would work. Professional grade mold air pumps cost about $600. However, I was pleasantly surprised it provides about the same results as the more expensive pump - when using Allergenco cassettes. It is simple to use. A minor quibble is that is factory calibrated to about 15 lit/min flow rate and cannot be changed. Using calibrators, I find these pumps give about 13-14 lit/min instead of 15 lit/min but this is OK as long as noted on the chain of custody form to the lab selected. Some comments. The main concern from mold is AIRBORNE exposure. This requires collecting airborne mold tests. The key problem mold is Aspergillus-Penicillium. Many labs only analyze x400 magnification which often greatly undercounts these tiny mold spores. When sending in samples to labs, request labs that use x600 or x1000 (best) to do the analysis. Should include an outside test for comparison. Standard (undisturbed) tests will not detect settled mold spores. By using a small house fan for one minute swept near the floor and surfaces by the pump, a lightly disturbed test can be taken,. This will often show much higher levels. See papers at my web site moldymike@moldtestingsd.com Pump should be placed about 4 ft above floor. This is a useful pump for persons doing their own tests or as a back-up pump for professionals.
