My magnetically attached Apple cover just fell apart after a few years, and its now discontinued (and was expensive too!) I was really hesitant to buy a cover that required something attached to the back of the iPad - these often look terrible and are thick. That said, this unit is FANTASTIC! I am really impressed and happy! The back covering is a relatively thin smoky plastic - you hardly see it. It fit well. The cover looks just like the Apple one, and it folds the same to prop the unit up. It has a nice look and feel to it too - and I am very happy to have it now!
