I prefer the Kruuse over the Walkabout
I have an older dog that loves long walks but is hampered by his chubbiness and a bum knee (combo of arthritis and a torn ligament). His mind, however, is sharp and he is an excellent problem solver.Since he likes to walk, he has been very wise at working with me on my various attempts to make his life easier. Sometime back I purchased a pet stroller so that we could still walk (other dogs) and then when he got tired he could hitch a ride the rest of he way. We became in sync with respect to when he wanted to "take a break" and when he was ready to walk some more. We have contemplated building him a wheelchair to help him better support his knee pain but have not arrived there yet so I researched knee support options and ordered this Kruuse Rehab Knee Protector as well as the Walkabout Canine Knee Brace 3.0 mm neoprene support sleeve [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0145YQESI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00]
I received the walkabout knee brace first and took it with me on the way to our walk without reading the instructions. It seemed fairly straightforward as far as slipping it over the knee and fastening it around him because the walkabout has two flaps to go around the dogs body. However, it kept falling off so I don't know how much it helped. It was only when we got back that I realized the item description clearly tells you that you have to attach it to your own harness, something I completely missed seeing when I placed the order. Since I don't currently have a harness for this dog, I can't say I have accurately tested it.
Next I tried the Kruuse. Again, took it out for our walk with no instructions. Unlike the walkabout brace, the Kruuse only has one strap and it was not intuitive as to how you were supposed to put it around the dog. My initial attempt was to go over his body and then under his belly but this did not work because the strap did not reach. I checked the amazon reviews and read one that said to wrap it under the belly and then over the rump and this worked for us. The under belly part goes right at the top of the leg and the over the rump part end us a few inches above the tail. It then fastens into a velcro side pocket.
We walked for an hour (about 45 minutes walking and 15 minutes of stroller riding for him) and the Kruuse did not fall off once. He seemed to have a skip in his step and appeared more surefooted when he was going up and down the sidewalk corners. He was able to pee and poop with no issues. I feel like the it would be good if it were a tad more snug in the fit around the knee but that is an easy fix with some basic sewing skills. I also read another reviewer who said it shrank a bit when it was washed, so I may try that.
Overall, this was a huge success.
I've uploaded some pics of how it fit.
