Practically maintenance free
I purchased this 4 years ago. I have had my pool for 5 years. My pool is a 27 foot round above ground pool. During the first year using traditional chemicals, I started to regret buying the pool all together. One day the chlorine was fine, the next - no chlorine at all (full sun). I spent close to probably $700 that year on chemicals not to mention all the trips to the pool store. The next year I switched to this. Get your water to the right salinity and turn this thing on. DONE! Now I don't even test my water. No joke, I have not bought or used test strips in 2 years. The only downside is that you have to clean the cylinder about every 6 weeks to two months. It is a 15 minute job. You turn off your pool pump, switch the filter to "winter", and disconnect the cylinder (only 4 screws). Put the cap on one end (comes with it) and pour distilled white vinegar in it and let is sit over night. Then reconnect and you are done for up to 2 months. No testing, just checking the skimmer basket, backwashing, and enjoying your pool. FYI - my pool is 17,000 gallons Tip: you want to keep your salt level as low as your chlorinator will work at. It is so much cheaper than chemicals. The pool store owner will tell you it's junk. But think of it - he makes all his money on chemicals. 4 years and it fired right back up this year. It would be cheaper to buy one of these every year new, than to pay for pool chemicals. My wife and I absolutely love this thing.
