A Little Bit Donut, A Little Bit Funnel Cake?
When it comes to gluten free donuts, the only brand I have ever tried was Kinnikinnick. Their donuts are okay flavor-wise, but they rely on heavy glazes and use a dense batter that sometimes feels a little dry. They are also relatively small, and while each box comes with 6 donuts, you feel like you're getting half as many just due to the size.
I kept seeing Katz on my Amazon searches for gluten free goodies, so I decided to toss a box on top of a larger order (via a different retailer), just to see if these donuts were any better than those produced my Canadian friends.
And ... yes.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was that the donuts just *looked* bigger. And this is kind of important when you're paying a premium for a special treat. You don't want to eat all of them at once just because they look tiny. The brain is a powerful thing, and you want to pull out the serving that you feel will be satisfying. With Kinnikinnick, I felt like that was 2 or even 3 donuts. With Katz, I felt comfortable pulling out one single donut. I don't think they're huge, but they appear about 1.5x as big as their Canadian cousins to my eye. Or, they look more like a normal cake donut. Your opinion may differ, but maybe you've also had some other donuts to compare these to.
The donuts arrived unfrozen, and while the box recommends freezing and then thawing in the microwave, I decided to give the donut 10 seconds in the microwave anyway. As we all know, gluten free goods do better with a little heating, but then I also didn't want these to melt or get *weird* or something. It seems that 10 seconds from room temperature was plenty, as the donut didn't get hot, wasn't soggy, and the powdered sugar didn't melt everywhere. So far so good.
Now, the flavor. The flavor! Remember those little powdered sugar donuts you would get at the gas station (back in the days when you ate gluten with reckless abandon)? That's what I was hoping for here--that slightly spicy, slightly sweet cake magic that melted into sugary perfection in my mouth. Did I get that? Yeeeaaaah ... I mean, it's been 8 years or more since I've had one of those donuts, but the flavor is still with me, and the texture of the sugar melting in my mouth is still there after all this time. The powdered sugar melted in my mouth and the donut itself had a really good flavor to complement the sugar.
But the best part was that the texture after microwaving was a little reminiscent of a funnel cake. It was softer, not like a dense cake, and I liked that. The cake held up and didn't fall apart, and there was something about the texture--a little chewy on the outside and softer on the inside--that, when combined with the flavor and all that sugar, brought me back to a place I haven't been in a long, long, long time.
If you're looking for a denser or dryer cake, this may not be for you. Flavor-wise I don't think you will be disappointed, and if you're looking for something that looks like a proper donut, this is definitely it.
I would definitely buy these again, and I would probably try some of Katz's other offerings as well.
