Personal preference
I own the rumble roller, the trigger point grid and now this one and this is the one I prefer. Yes, I do think the spikes could be stiffer but I like the extra give and find it more effective than the grid which was my favorite before this. The core is solid just like the trigger point grid and roughly the same size but there is more give to the top material than with either the grid or the rumble roller. So which one should you get? Buy a tennis ball and a lacrosse ball and try those first. You can do most anything with a tennis ball if it is deep tissue and trigger points you are after. If you have rolled out before with a tennis ball and a lacrosse ball and you prefer the tennis ball like I do, you probably prefer this roller to the rumble roller and even the grid. If you prefer the lacrosse ball (more firm than a tennis ball) then you will probably prefer the trigger point grid. I don't recommend the rumble roller for backs even though other people swear by it. I don't like the random pressure it puts directly on the spine. I find it more uncomfortable than dangerous but I still wouldn't do it. My husband though loves the rumble roller and he is less muscular than I am so it's hard to say what your preference will be. I'm keeping this one and will probably sell the trigger point grid now. I strongly recommend that you use Body Heat Vanilla Rub by Aloe Life or mineral ice or another similar product after rolling for faster healing and more effective muscle release. I don't roll out immediately after I work out. I come back in the evening before bed and undo whatever I've done to myself throughout the day before I go to bed. I also use it before I work out to stretch if something is sore. Update: My husband has been trying this one and likes it more than the rumble roller which was his favorite. I notice that he is using this one more often too. As an off-purpose side-note, my sensory child loves playing with this. She sits in front of it and rolls it back and forth on the different textures. Overall a very good purchase. I just hope with the top material being softer that it is still as durable as the other rollers.
