happy pigs
Our guinea pigs are about 5 years old and previously lived in the Midwestern Habitat cages. Ideally, this (JUMBO) cage is big enough for 2 guinea pigs, but with the balcony, 3 pigs could be comfortable. I love the hard bottom. All the pig poo, hay and stuffing stays IN the cage until I clean it out. It's also possible to lift the whole cage and transport it if they need to go to grandma's house while you go on vacation! With the Midwestern Habitat, the lower and more flexible sides allowed more stuff to come flying out and made clean up much harder, plus the material soaked up wetness and stains and got gross and stinky no matter how much I washed it out. I don't see that was being a problem with the hard bottom of the amazon cage. But the Midwestern cages can be joined if you have more than 2 pigs, and I don't think the Amazon ones can be joined. The pigs love the Amazon balcony, mostly because they love curling up under there to hide, and I don't have to use hiding houses, which means they have more room to run and play when they want to be active. They're not used to such a high ramp, but they are capable of going up to the balcony, and the more and more that they become used to it, the more they hang out up there. I'm actually using the hay rack included, and it's the first and only one I've ever found to be usable! For once a week deep cleaning/scrubbing, there's no way around it--the wire parts just have to come up and out. Removing the wires is not that bad, just takes an extra couple minutes to clip out and back in, but it's definitely a negative. It's too bad the side opening isn't larger, and that the side opening is on only one side, because if it was bigger and on both sides, that would resolve the issue of needing to basically disassemble the cage with every deep cleaning. I change out newspapers/spot clean every day, and can reach under there with the wires on just fine. We've had the pigs for many years, and although I've had this cage for less than a week, and they're both good cages, I think It's worth the extra few bucks over the Midwestern Habitat. I'll update with any changes, but this appears to be a well made, sturdy cage and I highly recommend it so far!
