Honda Odyssey factory roof rack experience
Totally satisfied with this Keeper product after our short 200 mile trip with speeds up to 80+ mph, but mostly in the 70-75 mph range. Also, we hit a short spout of rain and all items in the bag were 100% dry! I was alittle nervous about using the bag as it was our first time and the last thing I needed was to be dealing with the wife's and kid's clothes all over the road if you know what I mean. BUT, I was absolutely pleased with the performance on this short trip. I did stop a couple of times just to check that it was secure and no worries at all! Honda Odyssey specific use: After I received the bag, I noticed it was too long front to back to fit within the confines of the 2011-2016 Odyssey factory crossbars (BTW- our van didn't come with rails or crossbars and I just installed them this week before the trip- ordered from Amazon on the cheap and literally took 2 hours to install. Very easy if you have basic tools and a hacksaw- instructions are on YouTube or Google). To solve the length problem with the crossbars so that the bag wouldn't be hanging over the bars, I simply mounted it sideways with the side showing the word "Keeper" on the passenger side. I sat it on the Sherpak Supermat also available on Amazon and the bag didn't move at all. Setting it up sideways like that will allow you to stretch/push it under the confines of the square shape where the crossbars and roof rails meet. Then you load it from the driver's side. Just open both sliding doors and you can easily load it and zip it by standing on the sides and the back bumper. I also made sure to zip it so that the zippers were meeting on the backside by the rear lift gate. Last tip- once you tighten the straps down really good, it's almost impossible to feed them back through the plastic buckles for securing so I just tied knots right under the buckle and the straps didn't move at all. You'll see what I mean when you set yours up! How much did we fit on our roof? Well factory specs for the Odyssey rack are 165 lbs limit I believe, but I didn't really weigh our stuff lol. Just kind of guesstimated the weight and would say 100-120lbs. It was 2 beach chairs, baby pop-up tent, bag with board games, bag of 8 towels, medium to large size suitcase, and about 7-8 filled duffel bags. Mostly clothing. We could've added some more clothing type items or pillows around the edges to fill the rest of the bag, but these items filled it good and left it snug when zipped. I hope this helps you out with your decision because I wasn't able to find Odyssey specific formation for this bag, but am very happy with it and received good value for the money. Updated 6/18/2016: Used the bag on the return trip going another 200 miles and still no issues. I pushed the bag and zipper to the limit stuffing it full and pulling/stretching on the bag. It will be used on future trips, but even if it only lasted 1 round trip, for the price tag, it would have been worth it. I added a picture of the gear we had stuffed in it.
