The DynaMax baseplates are the rare exception where the "copy" outdoes the original. Forget that they fit all the different building block brands that you'd expect to fit (and not loosely - these suckers are snug). Forget that they not only have the studs on top, but are connectable on the bottom as well. The most important feature is that these fit together squarely. If a brick is straddling two (or more) of these baseplates, then the baseplates themselves fit snugly next to each other, as opposed to the Lego-branded ones which leave a slight gap between them when bricks overlap multiple baseplates. This can be inconvenient when designing/building a table (the typical solution is to connect them from the top with bricks to ensure proper spacing - but this is a non-issue with the DynaMax baseplates). Add in that these are more affordable, and you've got yourself an easy decision.
