Choosing Enamel to Avoid Heavy Metals Exposure
I just ordered a Chantal 40th Anniversary 2-Qt Enamel-on-Steel tea kettle (in Sea Blue). I haven't received it yet, but I can tell you why I chose it. I was recently diagnosed with toxic levels of Lead, Mercury and 2 other heavy metals. We are trying to determine and remove any and all possible sources of exposure. The gentleman who came to test our water this week said to get rid of our stainless tea kettle immediately, and only purchase one made in the US (presumably because the actual metal content would be more reliable). After some fairly exhaustive searches online, it turns out that there seems to be no such thing as a tea kettle made in the US! The best recommendation I could find were for the Chantal products which have a production connection to Germany (although they are not technically made there). I contact the company to ask definitively where their kettles are made. This is the response I got: "All Chantal enamel kettles are enameled under strict German standards and are imported under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements. They meet the all FDA and California standards required for kitchen utensils. All Chantal enamelware are lead-safe and cadmium-safe and meet FDA and CA Prop 65 requirements. Enamel is a silicate system which is not water soluble. No chemicals leach out of enamel once it has been through the firing process. "We make excellent quality kettles in a range of prices. Less expensive kettles have nylon handles and one-tone whistles. [Our] teakettles are made in several countries: Classic Teakettles: Thailand Bridge Teakettles: Thailand Loop Teakettles: Thailand Anniversary Teakettles: Thailand Tea Ball Teakettles: Indonesia Stainless Steel Teakettles: China E kettle: China Chantal's prompt and detailed response did give me some elevated confidence in their products. I still specifically avoided the stainless model since it is manufactured in China, which is notorious for using poor quality materials and not being transparent about it. I chose the Anniversary kettle for it's enamel construction, it's value price, and it's high percentage of good reviews. (My father has one of the classic kettles with the wonderful 2-tone whistle, so I'm familiar with the quality of that kettle, but it is out of my price range!) For now, I'm giving it 4 *'s because I'm pleased with the company's response, and pleased to find something safer than what I currently use. I will try to come back and update my review once I have used it for a while.
