I ordered these egg cases to launch an all-out bug war in my back yard. I have just too many insects crawling everywhere. The praying mantis is the perfect non-toxic way of controlling pests. Besides, they're really cool to watch. When the egg cases came in the mail, I strung them up in a jar to make sure that they would hatch. They did - hundreds of them - in about two weeks. I didn't want to keep them as pets, so I opened the jar in the back yard near some heavy cover. They immediately took their places to start the battle. Mission accomplished. Hopefully two or more of them will mate and give me a new generation next year. If you want to keep one as a pet, I recommend releasing them all and recapturing one after it grows a little. It's hard to feed the hatchlings with real tiny bugs. Now I have a mantis taking up residence on my outside window sill. It's really cool to watch him guarding the house!
