An important message from a scientist
Dr. Mann's book is required reading for anyone interested in how politicians and industry groups can go out of their way to attack scientists. Mann's discussion of how he and his colleagues handled attacks on research dating back to the 1990s is a compelling personal story. Imagine getting a letter in the mail one day from a Congressman asking for all your personal papers because he has a political ax to grind? Or the Attorney General of a state demanding all your old emails from a former employer because he wants to score some political points? Mike Mann has faced down these threats from powerful people (and more from the not-as-powerful) and lived to tell the tale. Even better, he's become a strong advocate for the necessary role science plays in society.
The attacks on Mann and other climate researchers continue, unfortunately, to this day. The book also offers a good primer on climate change science -- and the discredited arguments used to attack its findings. Readers who have followed climate science for several years will also be interested in the more detailed analysis of Mann's work. Overall, this is an important book because it represents a scientist who has long been in the public eye finally telling his own story.
One of his other books is a great illustrated primer to climate change science: Dire Predictions: Understanding Global Warming - The Illustrated Guide to the Findings of the IPCC
(Full disclosure: I have worked with Dr. Mann through my day job, though the views above are my own.)
