★★★★☆
The cure for computer rage.
This review is for the Samsung 960 PRO - Series 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. TL;DR │ Most insane NVMe drive yet. Insanely fast, insanely expensive, for insane people. - - - - - I am one of those insane people. I have 512GB (2×256GB) 950 Pro in RAID 0 for my gaming build, a 512GB 950 Pro for my laptop, and now, a 512GB 960 Pro (for the same laptop). From my first tests (RAID mode), two 256GB 950 PRO in RAID 0 (512GB total) is on par with a single 512GB 960 Pro, with the RAID having minuscule edge on random writes. This test was done with IRST (Intel) drivers. On my second tests, I used Samsung NVMe drivers, under AHCI mode in BIOS. It is evident how much faster the 960 PRO is compared to the 950 PRO. I do use "regular" NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 drive from Intel (600p), and I use it only for a NAS build OS. For day to day, the difference is negligible, and I would still recommend getting those less expensive NVMe drives. (Just skip the SATA... and the hard drives.) These Samsung "PRO-series" drives are for people who just wants the best and who do not mind paying for them. WHAT I LIKE │ + │ + Looks good, not plain. + Sticker/heat spreader orientation not upside down anymore + Better thermals than the 950 Pro + Faster than a single 512GB 950 Pro WHAT I DON'T LIKE │ × │ × Expensive. × Packaging can use better protection. × Other computers will seem slow, that you'd get rage from using them. × It is also worth noting that it took a long time to deliver because of product delay. PACKAGE │ ✓ ✗ │ ✓ Box ✓ SSD on insecure plastic cradle ✓ Printed materials ✗ No freebies For tests, I am putting this on an Alienware 13 R3, together with a 950 Pro. My machine has an i7-6700HQ, 32GB of usable RAM, and a discrete GPU. See photos for results. Both 512GB drives are tested in exactly the same configuration (cloned). The 2×256GB 950 PRO in RAID 0 is in a different machine. UPDATE: The first tests were done in RAID mode, using Intel drivers. I reformatted both drives, and reconfigured BIOS to use AHCI mode. This made it possible to use Samsung drivers. I uploaded another benchmark comparison (excluding the RAID 0 drive). - - - - - VERDICT: I highly recommend this product for people who's okay with paying for it. ★★★★☆ | 4 stars out of 5. Insane.
