I thought we had a dud, but now we're cooking!
I was a bit timid about this grill after all the reviews--some great, some horrible. At first, it was heating to 400 or 500 degrees just fine. Then it didn't seemed to work when I started the grill, but it was fine for my fiancé. (He was opening the gas line all the way, I was not) Then today with a full tank of gas it just wasn't heating--for either of us. The flame was hardly lit and we were barely heating to 200 degrees after 10 minutes. I started to look at the Lowes return policy, but decided to call Weber.
The support rep answered quickly for 6:00 EST and easily walked me through steps to fix our problem. We turned off the grill, unhooked the line from the tank (we heard the gas escape--a good sign). We waited 30 seconds with everything off and unhooked so the gas would dissipate. We reconnected it and Weber support told us to open the gas valve, let it accumulate in the line for 90 seconds without the burners turned on. After a full 90 seconds, we turned on the main burner, hit ignite and the grill fired up! Within less than ten minutes we were at 500 degrees.
Apparently, Weber has a built-in safety to prevent gas leaks from becoming even more hazardous. Since we weren't allowing enough gas to accumulate in the line before igniting, the grill thought it was only a leak and burned at 20% capacity.
