Ringke Defensive case vs. Spigen Rugged Armor case
For those who recently purchased an LG V20, the next logically step would be getting a case to protect their investment. At the time of this review, there are not many cases to choose from. There were two that stood out from the rest. Those were the Ringke Defensive case and the Spigen Rugged Armor case. Both offer a black case with a neutral low-profile design (not too flashy). Since I was not able to figure out which one I liked more, I just bought both. Below is a comparison of the two phone cases.
Form factor: In terms of form factor, the Spigen wins this one easily. The overall material used around the edge is thinner compared to the Ringke. This makes for a very low-profile look and a closer feel to the original form factor of the V20.
The Ringke offers more top and bottom bumper protection which in turn makes the overall height slightly greater as well.
Quality: Both cases seem to be built very well and I had no problems installing either case. Both took maybe three seconds to install/uninstall. The only negative I could find was with the Spigen case. The cutout where the speaker and headset go seem to be slightly off on the version that I got. Even with this complaint, I would say they are about even.
Protection: The Ringke definitely takes this category. While the Spigen may have a smaller form factor and lower-profile, this is at a sacrifice of overall protection. The top and bottom portions of the Ringke case have more material protection these vital areas and may protect it from larger impacts.
Grip: While protecting the phone is a case’s main objective another reason to get a phone is enhancing the grip. This one also goes to the Ringke since the side walls are bolstered a more flat wall and ridges on the side. This gives the Ringke more area to grip with your hands and fingers and the ridges provide additional friction reduces the likelihood of the phone slipping out.
Design: This is another area where there is a tie. I purposely picked these two because they were both black and subtle. Both offer a fake carbon fiber accent to give a little more style to what would be a very plain case.
The Ringke case offers an opening to put small lanyard ornaments. This was a nice touch.
If you are looking for a case that will you give you additional protection and grip, the Ringke is for you. If you are looking for a case that will give you protection but also keeps the profile of the phone the same, the Spigen would be more suitable. If you are somewhere in the middle, you cannot go wrong with either phone case.
