I love my big buddy heater
I love my big buddy heater! This hose works great! Buuuuttt....there are a few things that I figured out by trial and error that might help you if you are going to buy and use this hose. I like so many other people here have had trouble lighting their heater with this hose. It's not that there is something wrong with the hose, it's mainly because of the 12ft length and the fact that there is air trapped in the hose when it's not being used. Last time I checked air isn't flammable so what you need to do is purge the air from the hose before you connect it to the heater. Now what I'm about to tell you, the manufacturer probably can't tell you just because it could possibly be dangerous, but as long as you don't do anything stupid while doing this, ie. smoking or being near an open flame or wearing a static-y christmas sweater etc....if your not an idiot you should be fine. First connect your hose to the tank, turn the tank on, listen for the click of the safety device, take a pointy object, ie. pen, pocket screwdriver, nail, screw depress the plunger on the quick connector. Be careful as you do this because you will be releasing the trapped air and propane gas! Keep the plunger depressed for a few seconds, the smell of propane should go from slight to very pungent. Congratulations! The air in the hose has been purged! Connect your hose to your Buddy heater and light the pilot light as you normally would. It should fire up after a few tries. Now feel the HEAT!
After using this hose reliably for a number of years...I ran into my first problem with it. After connecting everything and depressing the plunger I got no gas...! Puzzled I checked and rechecked the connections, just as I stated above I listened for the telltale click...and I didn't get one. I disconnected the "ACME" connector from the tank and found that the thermal safety bushing had broken off and fell out somewhere. For those of you that don't know what a thermal safety bushing is...it is a white plastic washer that melts and disconnects the propane tank from the hose if it catches on fire. So since my thermal safety bushing cracked off and fell out....try as I may, the gas would not flow out of the tank because the missing bushing was not allowing the nipple on the connector to depress the valve on the tank! Resulting in no gas flow! So I bought a replacement "ACME" connector here on Amazon Mr. Heater Propane Acme Nut X 1/4-Inch Male Pipe Thread, Black Slapped that baby on with some teflon tape and I was back in business! I didn't have to buy a new hose.
I wasn't disappointed that the safety bushing broke...it happens. Iv'e had them break on other propane accessories as well, so I can't blame the company for that. I still give the product 5 stars! Well hopefully I can help at least 1 person with my experiences with the mr heater hose...so have a nice warm day!
