Excellent Chromebook for Everyone
The packaging is very easy to open, eco friendly recycled cardboard, wheat straw, and soy ink. I'm a current Chromebook user, so the whole process of unpacking and having my entire Chrome experience was about 10 minutes. Google oft mentions Chromebooks are for sharing, which they are, but they are also fantastic when upgrading our replacing a broken device. Gone are the times when a new laptop meant several days of restoring and installing. The Asus is a very attractive blue color with a few silver accents. All plastic construction, but it feels sturdy, while being really lightweight. No flex anywhere on my model, nothing creaking as I type. Only one little green LED the tells you the machine is on, nice and simple. The display is glossy, bright and has a reasonable viewing angle, not a high end display but comfortable enough. The keyboard and trackpad are very good. The keys have a nice touch, tactile feel, and rebound. I feel like I can type full speed on this keyboard and do it for hours. The trackpad is the perfect size, out of the way when typing, while being quite responsive to touch. Solid performance on input! I ran a few benchmarks, such as Google Octane, and the machine comes in at about 7200 on Google's test. Not bad. Actual browsing does exhibit some lags on graphic intensive pages, but overall the browsing experience is fluid and enjoyable. Videos play well, resolution is fair, and the sound is really quite good for such a small unit. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, all ran quickly with no stuttering or other issues. The charger is tiny, which is good. It looks like a micro-USB but it isn't, size wise the charger and plug are comparable to a phone charger. I haven't had the machine long enough to gauge battery life, but several hours of operation and the charge is still 90+%, so I expect the life to be good (13 hours is the spec). WiFi performance seems excellent. It connected to my D-Link router quickly, and has full bars of strength well past my other WiFi devices, and delivered stellar results on broadband speed tests. I really can't find any faults with this machine. It is a solid, attractive, nice performing unit at a great price. For an everyday carry device it is light (the unit is 2 pounds 3 ounces on my scale), easy to use, and has a battery that should last longer than I can most days. Update May 13th: Battery Life under general browsing with a few short videos tossed on my machine is 12 hours. Charge time is under 90 minutes from nearly empty to full. Really good. Also attached a pix of the adapter. It is very light and compact. The charger is 6 feet long (it seems a bit short to me). The metal conductors do not fold in. Still really happy with this Chromebook!
