GREAT piece of kit - but know the limits.
FIRST - My wife and I are the adventurous sort, and do a lot of traveling overseas (we currently live in Tbilisi, country of Georgia - just South of Russia). Knowing that we have this beacon gives us piece of mind that if anything should happen to us, all we have to do is follow the exceptionally clear instructions that are on the unit itself. Literally, the instructions are:
1- Flip up the antenna; and 2- turn the unit on.
That's it. The unit doesn't come with a manual because it doesn't need one. The battery replacement date is on the back, and the test instructions are just as easy as the activation instructions.
SECOND - Since there are a few reviews that complain that they can't test the unit, I'll dispel that now - when you press the "T" button, the unit sends a signal up and out to the COSPAS/SARSAT constellation, which then bounces the signal to ACR's local user terminal (LUT). The LUT then sends a signal back to your unit. The test will result in the green LED lighting up. That is the ONLY confirmation you will get. Short and sweet.
IF you live in North/South America, you can use 406link.com so further test your beacon. Personally, I think it's a waste of money if you plan on using your beacon internationally, since at the moment 406link.com ONLY WORKS IN NORTH OR SOUTH AMERICA.
THIRD - One note, once the battery life is ended, the unit should sent it to an authorized location for replacement, ACR will not sell you a battery (hey, this is a piece of lifesaving equipment, do you really want to take the chance?).
LAST - REGISTER YOUR BEACON!!!!!! It is a simple and easy process. You want a contact number so the one of the worldwide LUTs know who to call when your beacon goes off? REGISTER YOUR BEACON. Want them to know who you are when your beacon goes off? REGISTER YOUR BEACON! Do you have a medical condition that the rescuers should know about (e.g. diabetes, heart condition, etc)? REGISTER YOUR BEACON!!!
The registration instructions are on the ACR website and it is FREE.
LAST LAST THING - There is NO OTHER FEE associated with the beacon. You buy it, you register it, then you're done. Extra fees and subscriptions are for things like 406link.com. Let me say it again ... THERE IS NO FEE TO REGISTER THE BEACON, THIS IS A ONE TIME COST (ok, except for the every 5-6 year battery replacement).
