We had gotten a set of these cards a few years back, and (embarrassingly) they sat unopened, getting shifted place to place. Then. My elderly mom fell quite sick. A bewildering next few days, then weeks, then months ensued. Weeks long hospital stays, long hours and lost contact with the "outside" world became our reality. So many tests, procedures, doctor visits. I saw these cards and grabbed them on the way to yet another test via ambulance transport. I ripped off the plastic, pulled the first card, and, well, demanded participation from EVERYONE we came into contact with. The transport assistant, the driver, my mom, myself, lab techs, doctors, nurses, aids, visiting friends-nobody got a pass. The questions swept us away from the stress and discomfort, the boredom, the anxiety of whatever reality was truly delivering. They were a Godsend. Not a single person refused to play along. They provided a blessed diversion from the present and swept us to better times and solid memories of all the good we had. I ended up getting 2 more topic boxes to expand our conversations. I read these questions aloud to my brother and husband while holding my mom's hand in her last hours so that we could surround her with memories of family and love as she slipped away.
