Bottom Line: For large dog barking it works
Neighbor at my back fence got a large Doberman 6 months ago. I have a yard on more than half an acre and even if I don't go near the fence this dog barks at any family or friend that goes into my backyard. This dog thinks it owns my backyard and will routinely jump against the fence and bark ferociously. I don't understand why someone would want this dog unless they want to alienate their neighbors. The barking was non stop until I went back into my house. I have ignored this for a time, thinking that the dog would get used to me, but It got so bad that when I had family over for Christmas my father in law insisted that I do something about it and confront the neighbor. Well I need to split the cost of a new fence with this guy and some people defend their dogs like they are their children, they can do no wrong, and he is no different so I decided to buy this at my father in laws advice to avoid confrontation about the dog. I actually like dogs alot and would not like to see the dog destroyed. I figure its worth $36 to see if it works and I can always return it. I looked at a similar item that cost $60 and doesn't look nice (You can buy a bird house for it to sit in for an additional $60). No thanks. So this already looks like a bird house and I can just hang it on a tree. I set it to 50 ft range and hung it about 1 foot above the fence line on the back tree closest to the fence. I set it for 50 ft because my neighbor's yard is quite large and I wanted it to drive the dog back far from the fence. I saw immediate results. The dog will now bark a few times then stop and wimper and ran back in his doggie door. I think the owner of the dog knew something had changed because he even came out to see this new behavior. I think he thought I sprayed the dog with water or did something to the dog at first because he came out to inspect the dogs behaviour for 15 minutes trying to figure it out. That was the best part, watching them try to figure out what was wrong with his freakin barking dog, why it wasn't barking relentlessly anymore. He even threw a chew toy around a few times to get the dog going and excited but only a few barks and then stopped!. Now the new behavior is for the dog to pace back and forth along fence and growl/whimper at a low volume so as not to trigger the device. I only noticed this because was watching to see his behavior through the fence. It's not loud enough to bother anyone. Remember that this is a large dog with a low booming bark so I can't comment if it works with small yappy dogs (as others have commented it not working on) that may not set off the device, but for large low booming barks this works well. I got a bit of satisfaction when the owner came outside to figure out why his dang dog was so quiet. I think he actually liked to have the dog advertise its viciousness to keep others away from his yard. Well he will need to find a different way now that this dog barks about 5% of what it used to. I cant comment on longevity or how long the batteries last as I have only had it for 5 days. I hardly ever make reviews, but I had to make a comment because of all the bad reviews that almost kept me from trying this device. When I read the reviews I found most bad ones were for small yappy dogs that fail to set off the device. If you have a large dog problem give this a try. UPDATE: this worked well for 1-2 weeks. However, the dog now ignores the device, even with fresh batteries. I am sending it back. I feel bad that it worked so well at first and is now totally useless. Going to have to make complaints now I guess.
