GREAT product for rice, beans, and barley!
I make rice for sushi/onigiri about 3 times a week. One of the secrets to perfect rice is washing it until the water runs clear. Sometimes that can be very frustrating, especially if you don't have a tool to aid. I used to use a mesh strainer, but it was almost impossible to swish around the rice, which I think is key if you want to get the rice really clean. This makes washing it so much easier. Every grain gets wet, and swishing the rice around definitely makes the process go faster. With my mesh strainer it took about 5 minutes, and with this, it takes from 30 seconds to a minute, depending on how much rice I need to wash.
Nice bowl design. The plastic probably isn't all that expensive, but it serves its purpose. There are lots of very small holes in the bottom (1.5mm-2mm ish, small enough that no rice gets caught in them or escapes). The holes are small enough to trap the perfect amount of water (provided you have a steady stream of water coming from your faucet) for swishing. There is also a place to drain on the side with rectangular holes about 2mm wide and 2.5 inches long. Rice can sometimes get caught in these rectangular parts, so I try not to let the rice touch it, just the water.
If you aren't serious about rice, or don't make it more than twice a week, this probably isn't for you.
UPDATE 7/5/13:
I am still enjoying this product every time I make rice. Recently I've using this to wash beans and barley, too. One of the things I didn't mention when I first reviewed this product is that I don't have to get my hands wet if I don't want to. The water drains at the bottom of the bowl, which means I can wash by swishing the water around with the hand holding the bowl. I also cleaned mine in the dishwasher on the top rack. The packaging and the Amazon page didn't say that this was dishwasher safe, but it came out unharmed.
