“I run my mind. It does not run me.” Worth a watch, 4 ½ stars
Nolan (Athie) is raising his daughter, Ava, after losing his wife in car accident. He struggles with remembering and forgets to do things (picking his daughter up from school) and is threatened with CPS. He seeks help from a neurologist (Rashad) to regain his memories through experimental treatments that pull directly from a person’s subconscious, but the treatments aren’t what he expected. I’ll leave it at this due to spoilers. You may find yourself asking what does it mean to be you, to be conscious, if we have the ability to do so does that mean we should, ethics related to science, and questions along those lines.
It’s a bit slow to build but once it picks up, it’s difficult to turn away from the screen. If you feel it's dragging, do yourself a favor and stick with it. The acting is solid by all, with the girl who plays Ava (Amanda Christine) standing out. This is worth a watch if you enjoy sci-fi mixed with horror.
I'd love to see this developed into a series or mini-series.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: These are going to be minimal due to spoilers. Flashing/moving lights during treatments (seizure warning), domestic violence (flashbacks indicating it), death, loss of spouse. Language used: Fx1(I might have missed a couple but only recall the once).
