I am very pleased with our Zinus SmartBase bed frame. Installation: The frame arrives in two pieces which each fold in half. The legs are also folded in. This allows for a relatively compact box for shipping. The directions were easy to follow. I did require my husband's muscle to get the box upstairs but at that point, getting the frame up was a one-person job. Each half is unfolded and the legs are snapped down into place. Then the two halves are connected. All necessary hardware was included. I did use my electric drill to speed up the process but no other special tools were needed and a regular screwdriver would do the job just fine. Set-up: What makes this frame unique is that you do not need to use box spring mattresses. I did not realize this at first and got a good laugh with how ridiculously high the bed was with the frame, box springs, and mattress. It is an excellent height now that we removed the box springs. You should be aware that if you have a high-end mattress with a warranty on it, the fine print will say that not using a box spring voids the warranty. This did give me pause for thought as we invested in a very nice mattress last year but upon examination, the wire support on the Zinus frame seemed far superior than the wood support in our high end box springs. The frame has an 18-inch drop which means there is plenty of room for storage underneath. Use: We were replacing the frame that we purchased from Pier One for our California King Bed (also from Pier One). The Pier One frame was very rickety from the get go. It fully attached to the frame but always shifted which was noisy and annoying. The Zinus frame had holes that were presumably for attaching to a frame but they were in a very odd place. If you have a standard headboard, you'll have to do some reworking to get it to attach to the Zinus. If you are using this as a free standing bed, obviously this won't be an issue for you. I attached a picture of the work-around I built for our headboard in order to attach the frame to it. This should give you an idea of where the hole is on the frame. Once this was done, I was very pleased with the frame. It is very solid. It does not move around or make any noise. The mattress feels very supported. I am so thankful this frame worked out for us! I would definitely recommend the frame for anyone in the market.
