"Ultimate" suggests the best, and this set has several major omissions.
* When marketers use the word "Ultimate" - it suggests to buyers that they're getting the best - or that it's "complete." And although I still applaud any effort to restore some of Rita Hayworth's lesser-known works - these sets on DVD and Blu-ray are neither.
* Easy to guess that Sony / Columbia and Criterion wouldn't let Mill Creek Entertainment take its "classic Rita titles" - which would include "Gilda," "You Were Never Lovelier" and "Cover Girl" - which are NOT in this "ultimate" collection. Also missing is 1939's "Only Angels Have Wings" - in which she has a small part opposite Cary Grant and Jean Arthur - and 1941's "Blood and Sand" - where Rita is sensational as a femme fatale opposite Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell.
* Hence while Rita always dazzles, buyers should know that these sets do not include the top films which made her a legend.
* However, there are some exceptional titles - which I've tagged with a "star" (*) - if, in my view, they're better known - or if they feature Rita at the peak of her talents / fame.
The DVD set has 16 titles:
1. Girls Can Play
2. Special Inspector
3. Music in My Heart
4. The Lady in Question
5. Angels Over Broadway
6. You'll Never Get Rich *
7. Tonight and Every Night
8. Down To Earth *
9. The Lady from Shanghai *
10. The Loves of Carmen *
11. Affair in Trinidad *
12. Salome
13. Miss Sadie Thompson *
14. Fire Down Below
15. Pal Joey *
16. They Came to Cordura
The Blu-ray set, oddly, is marketed with twelve (12) "legendary performances" - and does NOT include the four (4) lesser-known titles below:
Girls Can Play
Special Inspector
The Lady in Question
Angels Over Broadway
I always try to provide helpful info to consumers - so I hope for now - that this fits the bill.
