Great! Instr. on toner reset
I've had this for three years now, and I love this printer. The speed is great, the reliability has been bulletproof, and the print quality is good enough if you're not doing photos. I will NEVER go back to inkjet after this -- after throwing out two inkjets in one year due to clogged printheads I bought this monster, and it's been extremely reliable. Below you will find instructions on resetting the toner to 'full' that I copied from another brother printer's review that also work on this unit (I am not the original author). Often you can get extra life from your toner this way:
** TO RESET TONER **
This will make your printer believe it has a brand new toner. Once it says toner low, you can reset it and just print until it runs dry, instead of replacing the toner when you still have 500 prints left.
1) Get to the home screen, if you are stuck at the "Toner Low" or "Replace Toner" message, just press the red X
2) Press the FAX button on the touch screen. This is ONLY to light up the numbers so you can....
3) LOCATE and only locate, don't press, the * (asterisk) button. You know where it is now, somewhere to the right of the Red X button
4) Press the glowing home button to get home.** IF YOU HAVE NEW FIRMWARE, FOLLOW THE UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS BELOW FOR THIS STEP **
5) Open the top as if you were going to change the toner, but don't remove any toner
6) With the top open, press and hold the now UN-LIT * (asterisk) button for at least 5 seconds
7) While KEEPING the lid open, the toner reset menu will show on the screen
8) Reset your "low" or "empty" toner by pressing the color and type to reset, all with the lid open
9) close the lid and wait about 40 seconds per toner that was reset (ie. 80 seconds if you reset 2, 120 seconds if you reset 3)
** UPDATE: You can no longer reset the toner from the home screen with the current firmware (as of May, 2016). Thanks to a comment from user "The Mikado", we have the solution: The key is not to go back to the main screen. Leave it on the screen that shows the 4 toner columns. If you hold down the star key from there, it will still take you to the reset pages.
Good luck. Happy printing.
cstd = cyan Standard, cstr = cyan starter, and one other for high yield, etc... Just reset to whatever type you have installed.
2016 UPDATE: I've now had this printer for about three years, and it has been rock solid (I've nearly 7000 pages with it so far). Not a single problem with the printer itself ... however, the crappy aftermarket / non-Brother toner I've been using has not been as trouble-free (more on that later). I got nearly 2500 pages out of the original brother 'starter' cartridges by resetting them, and other than that I've been exclusively using aftermarket toner. Whereas the Brother cartridges are ~$200+ for a full set, a full set of aftermarket cartridges goes for ~$50 ... however, I've only been getting 1000-1500 pages out of them, the print quality (color, in particular) is not as good, and (as of 2016) I had one that leaked toner all over and made a real mess. I've used cartridges from multiple sellers and manufacturers, and none of them are at Brother's level of quality -- after experiencing issues with print quality and leaking while using aftermarket toners, I plan to go to Brother toner once my wife is out of school and my printing needs diminish somewhat.
In the prior update I noted that I figured I'd save enough money using aftermarket toner to just replace the whole printer when I drew an unlucky cartridge, but I chose to just clean up the mess instead. I took me a very long time to get the print quality approximately back to where it was prior to this incident. If you demand the best possible print quality & don't want to spend hours cleaning spilled toner from your printer, I recommend the Brother carts.
A final note from experience: I found that assigning the a fixed IP address in my router (I use it over a network) helped to make sure that my computers never lose connectivity to the printer.
