A riveting page-turner
I couldn't get this book out of my mind after finishing it. Imagine my surprise when I go to Amazon to review it and see what appears to be a concerted effort--by male complainers--who didn't bother reading the book before hate-rating it. Apparently, incels have a book club--and only read male authors.
Disregard the trolls and treat yourself to this book. White builds her plot on a true crime and brings all the players to life by expertly weaving past and present. I found the structure highly effective; I was hooked from the beginning. An unlikely duo of a true crime podcaster and the investigator from the original case are front and center as a new investigation into the old case is necessitated. I thought I knew where the mystery was going--I didn't.
The author is an expert at using setting to evoke a tone in her stories, and this one is no different. Coupled with her descriptive prose and gift for building suspense, this one had me racing to finish it. I highly recommend it.
