A few of my favorite things
So I love latex pillows. They don't sleep "hot" like memory foam does. But they're hard to describe because they're unlike any other pillow. Can't say they're simply soft or hard. So I'll just compare it to cakes and eggs. Memory foam is like pound cake or frittata. Dense. Heavy. Latex foam is like angel food cake or soufflé. Springy. Spongy. Light. With memory foam, your head sinks into and molds to the pillow. There's no "pushback" With latex foam, your head doesn't sink per se, there is minimal give. Akin to a balloon. Springy and bouncy. These Brooklyn Bedding among my favorites out of my growing collection: -Simmons Beautyrest Talalay Latex (firm) -Z by Malouf Talalay Latex Zoned (all four types) High loft plush and firm Low loft plush and firm Got em all because I'm like Goldilocks and wasn't sure which ones I wanted and I also like being encased in a pillow fortress while I sleep. Pros: -Price 100% Latex, non-shredded versions are EXPENSIVE. Those Z by Malouf have skyrocketed since I purchased them at $70-80 to $150 a pop. I got these in the queen high loft in both plush and firm for the price of one latex pillow! -Comfortable The plush was perfect as a side sleeper. Slept like a log. The firm makes for a great hugging pillow. Stats: Female. 5'5", 125 lbs. Non-broad shoulders. Cons: The firm was not for me, as it was for all other brands of latex pillows I've had. Too high, it cricked my neck and I woke up with sharp pains in my shoulder. However, my boyfriend loved it and has since taken it under his custody. He's a side sleeper too, but also has broad shoulders so the high loft was a perfect height for him. He hated the plush, because he said he sunk in too much and felt like he was going to suffocate in his sleep. Stats: Dude. 6'. 200ish lbs. Robot shoulders. Noggin top heavy. Choose based on your food preferences analogy, stats and sleeping positions. Not sure if I'd recommend for belly sleepers, unless you want to hyperextend your neck or actually suffocate on latex in your sleep. Wish there was a low loft option of these for those times you want to stare at your ceiling and snooze. **UPDATED** I've had these for five months. Ratings remain the same, but there are some caveats to the plush and firm. My beloved plush version is no longer side-sleeping friendly. It has flattened considerably, forcing me to cradle it underneath for added height. Even when I do, my shoulder caves inward in awkward position. Imagine shielding your ruptured eardrums from the screams of your toddler or significant someone. Now sleep in that exact position on one side. Godspeed to anyone you encounter in the morning. If you haven't been kicked to the couch or curb for your sleep-deprived outburst and dagger-to-the-neck induced like pains, fantastic! After its initial "break-in" period, a feature uncommon with my other latex pillows, this is NOW the perfect pillow for "those times I was want to stare at the ceiling and snooze" aka back sleepers. The firm version is ironically my favorite. I suggest reconsidering the firm if you're a side sleeper, with some adjustments, namely time. As mentioned in my original review, I was pretty vocal about my disdain for all firm pillows and with this one especially, that I tossed aside for my boyfriend to use. But after what felt like eons of insomnia and pain with my plush pillow, one night I just decided to yank my old firm from beneath his heavy noggin. The repeated use and weight from his cranium for the last five months has deflated it to the perfect height for me. All was right in the world. TLDR; Both the plush and firm need "breaking in" time to suit your sleep positioning needs. Whether you have the patience to do so is on you. Firm can be perfect for side sleepers. 1) Give your special someone the firm. Say it is a gift. 2) Wait five months. 3) Snatch it while they sleep. 4) Look forward to a blissful night of sleep and drown out the inevitable yelling with the now perfect pillow. Plush can be perfect for back sleepers. 1) Repeat 1 and 2 Neither plush or firm are good for stomach sleepers. If you're a stomach sleeper, my original review still holds true, this isn't for you. You will suffocate in your sleep.
