Think Different - the KEYone is unlike anything else.
In a world where phones are turning into slippery slabs of glass and aluminum, Blackberry Mobile has released a phone for those of us who need to get work done. While phones have become status symbols for the general public, the KEYone is for those of us who are banging out emails all day, communicating on Slack, or maybe even are prolific on Social Media.
You can also do a fair amount of writing as you get used to the PKB. Thanks to Android Nougat you can use the phone in split screen mode so you can have Word open with Chrome or Kindle and type away with reference material open.
The secret sauce that makes this phone what it is is the physical keyboard. Which is also smarter than than you might imagine. It includes autocorrect via swiping, and the ability to use the board as a trackpad. It's fantastic, and has a good amount of tactile feedback. I like it.
The KEYone also has fantastic battery life. Many are getting almost two days out of the beefy battery and energy efficient processor.
So far apps have been well behaved and the system hasn't hiccuped much outside of the flurry of initial downloads and app installs.
EDIT (06/03/17): I continue to get better at the keyboard. It is incredible how having tactile feedback makes you more inclined to type even if you may be faster with a Virtual Keyboard.
Since the device allows you to split screen I am also very productive. I even had Slack and an SSH session open at the same time. Since there's no VKB to take up space this worked very well. As an aside, since Android allows the SSH app to also run in the background it is sad to say that this works better than my iPad Pro.
The camera is pretty good for a productivity phone. But not as good as my Galaxy S7. It does manage to surprise me with how good some shots turn out. As many have said before it is the same sensor as the Google Pixel. However, the software processing is not as good. Also there is no OIS so video is a bit shaky when handheld. Not sure if it has electronic image stabilization like the Pixel but video is not as stable as footage I've seen from that phone.
The launcher is very minimal. Almost stock Android. I disabled the BB hub. I just dont need all of my notifications in one place. Also hear that it is a memory hog. Another slick trick of the launcher is that you can assign a different app or action to launch for each key on the keyboard. Both for short presses and long presses. That's about 50 actions!
In a world where everyone is rushing to eliminate tactile interfaces and become just a slab of glass - the KEYone stands out. I'll update this review over time but I hope this phone succeeds. So far it has exceeded my expectations.
