Very helpful book!
I saw a couple bad reviews saying that the book was too harsh on people with BPD. I know a few BPD folks who take care of themselves, deal with their disorder, don't negatively impact the people around them, and are generally wonderful. Luckily, that means the people in their lives won't need this book. This book is for people who care about somebody with BPD who DOESN'T manage their disorder properly, and who negatively impacts those around them as a result. My mother is diagnosed, but refuses to see any therapist, psychiatrist, or other mental health professional for more than a few sessions. She engages in all kinds of unhealthy coping mechanisms, drinking and drugs, and abuses her family. She oscillates from blaming things (like stabbing someone) on her BPD, to claiming she was never diagnosed. This book has been super helpful over the years for learning how to effectively manage her abuse and unpredictability. If my mother were more introspective and open to getting help, I may not have needed this book, and I might say it was too harsh. But when you're dealing with somebody diagnosed with BPD who won't acknowledge that any of their behavior is harmful or problematic, sometimes you need to be harsh or you'll be abused! BPD is a wide spectrum, and as the title of the book states, this book is for loved ones of BPD folks on the severe end of the spectrum, whose BPD is unmanaged and causes harm, making everyone around them "walk on eggshells." There are tons of other books out there about BPD, including some cool ones written by people with BPD, that you might like more if you've been diagnosed and are trying to learn more, or if your BPD loved one is on the less severe end of the spectrum.
