I almost didn't get this due to reviews citing horrible chemical smells, but took the dive and I'm quite pleased. At least in my case, it turned out to be the typical electric-motor smell from lubricants that you find in many a mechanized appliance, albeit somewhat pungent. Further, it comes from the base of the device, which is well apart from your precious grounds; you can make a case for oils getting on the outside of the grinding chamber in a worst case, but I don't see them ever get inside and contaminate the grounds. All 3 settings delivered the desired consistency in relative quick time. Cleanup was fairly easy with a little improvisation: the chambermaid system requires you to turn the lid a few times to activate- a friction-inducing action which I imagine would test the seal./locking mechanism over time. I simply removed the lid and manually pushed the chambermaid around with a finger before shaking the grounds out and washing components by hand. This would be a clear 5 star review, but for the slight odor (which really wasn't much of an issue to me) and the puzzling fact that use in accordance with manufacturer specifications may actually wear the product down faster. It is recommended for the grinder on a budget, who's willing to cope with slight imperfections. I will be sure to update if anything changes for better or worse. Update March 13, 2019: How time flies! +1 year of nearly daily use & it works as well as it did on day 1. Chemical odor is gone & the chambermaid and I maintain a very cordial relationship.
