She died on the job (Updated..must read!)
Bought this for my wife's Christmas present. To my dismay, it worked great and she loved it. We even named the damn thing Dorothy. One day out of the blue, she was found dead while on the job. I was finally able to get a little response when her light would rapidly blink amber (not a good sign, but life was present). I tried a reset, but then her light turned red and she told me she had an Error 5. I put her on the charger for 72 hours as I had read somewhere. Still the same issue.
She only lasted just over 2 months. I put in a ticket with Roomba, but I've heard I'm wasting my time. We'll see.
3/15/2016 - iRobot customer service absolutely floored me. They are wonderful! They worked with me trying to resuscitate Dorothy with no luck. They even sent a new battery thinking the old battery was bad. That wasn't it. Then I finally found the problem. The parts that hold the hex nuts where the retaining screws fit to secure the bottom cover were deteriorating. The hex nuts spun loosely therefore not allowing the screws to secure the cover. Because of this, the battery would not sit securely in place. It seemed to me a design flaw so I sent pictures informing iRobot. They must have agreed because they sent a brand new unit! Not just replacing but upgrading to the next series!!! We're trying her out now and she's already had to be emptied twice! I have never seen this level of customer service anywhere. So, if you buy one, do so with confidence.
11/16/2016 Final update: I was reminded to update my star ratings (thanks) so I have. Thought while here I'd do a final update. Dorothy II has been earning her pay. Haven't had any issues at all with her. It does seem she responded better to objects in her way at first, but she mostly bangs into things...Not all the time, but most of the time. I've washed her eyes out (cleaned the IR sensors with alcohol) but that didn't seem to help much. Can't fault her too much for that...I'd run into things too if I didn't have my glasses on, but they haven't made glasses for the ol' girl yet.
The only feature I wish Dorothy had, and the higher-end models may have something like this, would be an SOS alert! Dorothy can spend well over an hour cleaning, and we forget about her. Then we notice she never went back to bed. Knowing she probably strayed too far away or got stuck somewhere, we'd have to get a search party and look all over the house for her. It would really be helpful if she had a way of letting us know where she was!
