1. Yes they are see through 2. Yes they are just as soft after the first wash The see through part doesn't affect the softness or the quality (in my opinion). I am still not sure what the see through problem is. I am very impressed by them, I used them for the first time last night and I am pleased to report that this over heating woman had no issues with the sheets heating up or anything bad to report. Hope that you enjoy them as much as I did after you purchase them. *update* 4 months, many washes later I feel the same way and my opinion hasn't changed.
