If you're looking for a good add-on comfort option, this is quite good
I went in search of a product like this after noticing that my office chair (which I had admittedly cheaped out on when sourcing) seemed to be creating a patch of dry, scaly skin on the elbow I tend to lean on; rather than forcing myself to give up sitting like Captain Kirk in my chair, I went decided aftermarket armrest pads were more my style.
These are quite thick at about an inch, but they are also fairly compressible; they push back just enough, but will also yield if you try to crush them. That standing inch difference does, regrettably, mean my chair no longer fits under my desk, but that's hardly a deal-breaker. The pads are quite comfortable, and while I cannot say I have observed any "cooling" sensation, they do not appear to ever become what I would describe as "warm", so perhaps that is the extent of it. My only complaint about this solution would have to be regarding the method by which they attach to the arms of the chair: velcro, while flexible and reasonably secure, is unpleasant in terms of noise and the straps are very long. That length must then be either left to dangle, or rolled up under or beside the cushions which ends up snagging nearby material such as clothes. I also do not have a high enough confidence in the longevity of my chair to trim the velcro down to a length appropriate for its current application.
The tradeoff to this is that it's a flexible enough solution that it could conceivably be used with many different types of armrests; however I think its true strength is in the style with a single pillar supporting the armrest, as opposed to the style that is a loop of material. It will still work on those, but be more prone to sliding forward and back.
