Already off to a good start! First a little backstory
I've got to start off by saying, I bought the winix 5300-2 on Saturday afternoon and paid for the two-day shipping expecting to receive the pkg on Monday. So I was surprised when I got a knock on my door Sunday afternoon, it was my pkg. Already off to a good start! First a little backstory: I just had to replace my heater which was $3500. If you've done this you know that When you run a new system especially one that is more powerful than the old, you'll get a ton of dust particals blowing out from the vents(I live in the desert). Now to the meat & potatoes: After a solid day of researching air purifiers and the need to have one asap(Thanksgiving held at my house this year). I chose the winix 5300-2. Easy set up right outta the box(5-10 min to read instructions and set up filters). Since I've only had it for less then 24 hrs I can't really say too much regarding the effectiveness as I'm still in the process of scrubbing my house clean. I can say that while I've been cleaning a room and having the purifier in the same area, the air quality indicator has gone from red or amber to blue rather quickly(I have it set on the 3rd fan setting). The air seems fresher as well. I haven't checked the filters to see how much dust has been filtered through. I'm waiting until I've scrubbed my house from top to bottom. I can say it smells fresher and my asthma has settled down in the short time I've had it running. On the first three fan settings the Winix 5300-2 is a quiet machine. The 3rd fan setting is the sound equivalent to a newer desktop computer(quiet enough to have in the bedroom at night). The turbo setting is another story. It rivals my new heater in terms of noise(in turbos defense, it moves a ton of air). There is an odor(not off putting to me) that is noticeable when set on turbo(I think it's the NEW filter smell, especially the carbon filter). Or it could be the quality of the filter. I opted not to purchase the so called "better" or "higher quality" filters. I do notice that the more it runs, the less I smell the odor. My final takeaways regarding the winix 5300-2: 1) The styling is, in my opinion, far superior than other similarly priced purifiers. Which makes it less of an eye sore. 2) It's best to run on turbo when you're not home and use 1-3 fan setting as maintance when home. 3) Fan settings 1-3 are quiet enough to have in the bedroom at night. 4) The purifier was priced very well($188 with 2 day shipping) compared to like systems. 5) Its to be determined in regards to the amount of dust and particles it has collected. As I'm giving it a week or so of running before checking the filters. BUT the asthma test is telling me that it's working as advertised. Update: I finally took off the cover to check the filters and sure enough it was dirty(check pic). The pre filter was caked with dust and the carbon filter(I couldn't get a decent pic showing dirt) looked like a black shirt with dried sweat stains. I'm 100% sure I made a good buy with this product!
