Great Potential!
So far I really like this Air Fryer. The only problem i had with it, which is why I am giving this 4 stars in stead of 5 stars, is the basket didn't slide in nicely. I was about to return it then I accidentally found out just the right technique to insert it and now i can put it in pretty easily. On mine at least, you had to pick up on the handle a little when inserting it and it would gently slide right in easily... a little annoying you have to do that. But overall i still love the device. Attached is a picture my first Air Fry attempt, which was the fried chicken recipe. I thought it turned out pretty awesome for a first attempt and it was absolutely delicious! The outer crust isn't 100% like deep fat fried chicken but it was still pretty nice considering I only misted on some olive oil on it. I bought a can of olive oil spray and that worked nicely. I needed to re-spray the chicken in a few places when flipping it, while cooking, because without the oil spray to moisten and crisp up the flour, it just looked like a dry flour coating. Once oil is spritzed on and after a few minutes cooking, it magically creates a nice crispy outer crust. In the instruction book I got with it for the chicken recipe it says too "Add the seasoning to the flour 'with the oil' and mix well" Not sure what it was talking about there about adding the oil to the flour, but you don't add the oil to the flour mixture. It is only used to mist over the outer coating right before cooking to make it nice and crispy. The only CONS are: - The basket doesn't slide in without some finesse. This can be worked around easily though but its certainly not fool proof. - I got the 5.6 QT version and it is pretty large, still not sure where I'm going to store it when not in use yet. - EDIT 4: I wish they had put in a removable & washable metal mesh in to act as a splash guard between the heating element and the food. I was cooking a huge bird once and i assume it had some chicken grease splatter up on the heating element and the Air Fryer became a smoke machine... It vents out the back, so i ended up putting it right by the window and made a little chimney out of tin foil to vent the smoke outside and i just let it burn off. This is not something that should stop you from buying this Air Fryer because I have used this thing a million times now and this has only happened once when I put too large of a chicken in it. I would call this partially operator error, but a splash guard would go on my wish list to make it fool proof. I have really high hopes for this device and i think it will really deliver on it's promises since I had such a great experience with the 'fried chicken' recipe. EDIT 1: I have had the Air Fryer for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it! I added pictures for a whole chicken I made in it as well as some home made fries. The whole chicken I made was honestly one of the juiciest chickens i have personally ever made A++ rating on it! Very impressed! The home made fries are obviously not 100% as good as deep fat fried but the fact that I only used 2tbl spoons of olive to toss them in before cooking makes up for it. I will give the home made fries a B+ rating. More then adequate to satisfy a french fry craving. I have also cooked many of my kids favorite frozen foods and it did an amazing job heating them up. IE: frozen fries, mini corn dogs, chicken nuggets, etc. I wish i could raise my star score to 4.5 because the only reason for not giving it 5 stars was the basket not sliding in smoothly and now that i'm getting used to it that is less and less an issue. EDIT 2: Still loving this device. I have made many other things in it, including a bone in 1/2 a Turkey Breast which turned out wonderful. One other additional note: I have read several places that the handle doesn't fair so well in the dishwasher even though it says dishwasher safe. So i went to the local hardware store and bought some screws with wingnuts so i can easily take that handle off each time I wash the basket. No clue if this is absolutely necessary but since I am a throw it in the dishwasher kind of guy I figure better safe then sorry. EDIT 3: I have made many Whole Chickens in this now. Two important things for whole chickens: (1) let the bird sit out for 45 minutes prior to cooking as many Air Fry recipes recommend. (2) I found that it doesn't do well with very Large whole chickens. I noticed when I use too big of a bird that it doesn't cook right. It usually ends up overcooked due to the fact i have to keep extending the cook time because it had still not reached proper cook temperature deep down inside the bird measured with a thermometer. It does do awesome with small birds though so I'm still a big fan but i'd recommend against filling the entire basket with too big of a bird.
