Ignores the majority of African slavery
This is a beautiful and generally informative book. However, it only highlights and maps the people sold by Africans to countries and territories in South and North America. Dedicating a two-page spread to "The Atlantic Slave Trade" gives a historically inaccurate impression. Of the 34 million people that Africans sold into slavery, 35% went to the Americas (and more than 95% of those people went to places other than the United States). The other 65% of the people sold by Africans into slavery went to other parts of the world. Why is the story of the vast majority of Sub-Saharan African slaves obscured in this book? Very little in the long history of humanity is as reprehensible as slavery, and even a broad survey of history must do better in recognizing the extent and complexity of it.
