Compare to Fatwood
I know there are people who can start a fire with a single match and a wood chip. There are plenty of techniques to keep a fire going overnight. But not me. No. I struggle almost every time. And every morning I start a new fire in a cold stove. Part of this is choice. Most of it isn't. I'm fond of firestarters. I used to like those duraflame starters but haven't been able to find them cheaply anymore so I bought these and Wood Products 9910 Fatwood Box, 10 Pounds to compare. My fires are all with seasoned hardwood, kindling, and newspaper. Using the one of the nuggets I had a modest fire going in about 20 minutes. Using two of the fatwood sticks the fire was roaring along in about 10 minutes. Here's the thing. In 30 minutes, the fires were both the same. In fact, it seemed to me that the nugget fire had burned more slowly through the kindling and caught more of the larger logs on fire, while the fatwood had devoured the kindling too quickly to get a good start on the logs. But it didn't really make a difference. Both fires burned. The difference comes at the price point, both are around $23. There are a hundred nuggets per box and around a hundred fatwood sticks. But if you use two fatwood sticks per fire (as suggested) that's only 50 fires compared to a hundred nugget fires.
