Works as advertised - met expectations
I am extremely pleased with this product. My detached garage used for office/man cave is roughly 30’x20’ (600 square feet) with 2 windows roughly 2’ wide by 4’ tall (no blinds or drapes). One window faces north and the other faces south. There is about 18-24” of insulation of the Green Fiber standard Lowes/Home Depot blown into the attic. I did cut holes and blow this into the walls as well – as best I could anyway. I’m running an LG ductless a/c – 24K BTU to heat and cool my garage. Half the floor is painted concrete and the other half is rubber mats for gym equipment.
The oversized 18’ garage door faces the east so is in full sunlight from 9ish until 2pm-ish. When standing next to the garage door without this product, you could no doubt feel the radiant heat; in fact that side of the room always stayed several degrees warmer. In using my Infrared Thermo gun, the outside of the garage door measured 110 degrees when the outdoor temp was 91 degrees (mid-June Texas day). The concrete directly below the garage door read 108 degrees so the door was actually hotter than the concrete which makes sense as its metal. Walking back inside of the garage, the inside of the door was 105 degrees, yet when pointed at the white insulation, the temperature measured 83 degrees – 22 degree difference. As you can see from the pics, I pulled back the insulation and pointed the laser directly at the metal garage door.
Before installing, I typically would set my thermostat to 76 during the day and it would run non-stop (as ductless units do) to keep the temp at 76. After install, I set the a/c at the usual 76 and noticed the temp was down at 73 degrees – this event occurred 2 days in a row same outdoor temps. I’ve since been setting the temp at 80 and it’s keeping the temp at 76. The fan on AC is set to auto and I can tell its now running on the lower speed setting consistently rather than the high speed(before application). Both my wife and I can tell that side of the garage is much cooler than before.
I installed this product over a 3 day period. First day was I thoroughly cleaned the garage door with water and Simple Green degreaser allowing it to dry overnight. I had to remove the hurricane braces which was a pain but manageable with only 1 person. I did not bother trying to mark the exact same holes, but rather used the self-tapping screws to put it back as close to the original position as possible. The tape went up the 2nd day and was allowed to dry overnight. I had some tape left over – If I could do it again, I would have used two strips for the vertical pilliars – as you can see from the pics, I centered the tape where I could have put 2 strips vertically. Seems plenty strong as is especially with the hurricane bracing holding it up.
As all the other reviews stated, Mike is very responsive and extremely helpful. Will be purchasing this for my attached garage door as well as my water heater and wherever else I think it may apply. The post office did lose my package and admitted to doing so, but Mike did promptly send a new one with expedited shipping. It was when the 2nd arrived, the post office realized the original order had been just sitting in the post office for some time…
