Angry men leaving one star reviews are why this docuseries is IMPORTANT.
I'll preface my review by saying that I'm a survivor of mental, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of relatives and significant others. So perhaps my view is a little biased based on the things I've endured and witnessed in my life. I was only 3 years old when this trial took place, but I've still grown up in a culture that suppresses women who come forward with stories of abuse of any kind. "What did she do to make him mad?" "She's just making it up for attention." "She's exaggerating, it wasn't that bad." "She was asking for it." These are just a few of the statements I grew up hearing and I know Lorena was berated with during this time. There may still be people who won't see her side, who will defend that man to their last breath, and that is what it is. But I think the main cornerstone of this series was the focus on how serious of an issue domestic violence is and how Lorena was the catalyst of a movement of women who said enough is enough and we aren't going to stand for it anymore. Some of this series was hard to watch, seeing her re-live the trauma. But after it all I feel so empowered, not because of what Lorena did. No. Because of what she ended up meaning for so many battered, traumatized women in America and around the world. Maybe you thinks she should have been locked up. Maybe you think she was completely guilty. Though I disagree with you there, I think one point that no one should disagree on is how important the movement against domestic violence was and is to all women.
