Samsung UN43RU7100FXZA 43" is a Very Dumb Smart TV (well, maybe not so dumb)
I've only had the Samsung UN43RU7100FXZA 43" for a few days but here are my initial thoughts. This is the first ultra high Def (UHD) TV I've owned and the first LED. The picture quality is superb. The difference between UHD and HD is extraordinarily noticeable even on ancient DVD movies and all TV shows. The set-up and remote are almost as bad as the picture quality is good. The remote is "dumb". It cannot be programmed to act as a universal remote (even though the confusing set-up procedures imply that it can) so I have to have 3 remotes at all times, one for the cable box, one for the Samsung and one for my surround sound system. The TV is Wi-fi enabled and found my home network instantly. It also has some kind of limited bluetooth. But the bluetooth is limited to driving and external speaker. No other devices (like my iPhone or iPad) are recognized. This is a serious bummer, because although the TV snd remote are enabled for Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, I was only able to (with great effort and a call to Samsung, whose operator by the way was extremely helpful) set up Netflix and Amazon Prime. No Hulu (it refused to recognize my existing subscription), so I need to keep my Apple TV connected to use Hulu and Apple's Airplay because of the lame bluetooth). So that actually adds a fourth remote control that I need to have. The enclosed "Manual" is a joke and totally useless. It's about 10 pages long and contains no useful information. There is a generic E-manual that you can download for free. It's much longer and does contain more information, but it, too is mostly useless information. It has a section on remote controls, just not the one that came with the v Samsung UN43RU7100FXZA. Maybe things will improve with more time spent trying to figure out exactly how the Samsung engineers intended for this TV to be used, and if so I will update this review. Meanwhile, "you get what you pay for" no where more evident than with this TV which happens to be the least expensive 43" LED TV I could find. If all you want to do is watch cable or satellite TV, its fine. Better than fine. But for the most sophisticated users, I reiterate. — you get what you pay for. JM Tepper Update after 1 month. I’ve upgraded my rating to 4 Stars. The picture remains very good to excellent. The “smart” features are better than I had thought. But I did have to make a couple of calls to Samsung to figure out how to access some of the non-intuitive user interface. Now that I have access to my Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime accounts, color me much happier. Did I mentionYouTube? One click and all of YouTube is on my TV in 5.1 surround. I often play concerts and jam out With the Dead or anyone through a small practice amp that I put in the TV room for this exact purpose. The remote still leaves much to be desired, and it is not clear to me why I have to change input settings on my sound system as I used to when using the streaming accounts since I’m now running all audio through the TV (it is possible that this is user/configuration error on my part), but other than that, everything works as advertised. I don’t see how you can beat this $379 TV for the price.
