My penance.
This is a beautifully written book by a man who knows about a boy coming of age, less about Viet Nam. I am a 75 year old women so know nothing about the former, but more about the latter. I was a 20 year old flight attendant in 1966. I had a great job that I loved and a good life because I was a girl and didn't have to fight in Viet Nam. I did take joyful excited young men toward the jungle and brought quiet saddened young men back. I felt guilty that I got the life I lived and they returned forever changed or not at all. I am a hyper-empath and could literally feel some of their pain, so I spent time with them, listened, took them for coffee and tried especially hard to give them good flight. Later I had a good TV friend who bore the mental scars of that war and we were friends because that meant something to me. Now we thank those who serve and, although I say thank you, it rings hollow in my ears as I remember the abuse Viet Nam vets came home
Young men should read this book, there is some good advise inside. It is a tear jerker for those like me. I have read a lot of books about the Viet Nam war, they hurt me, so they are the penance I serve because I didn't have to go and unlike so many men my age and younger I am still here. If you know any Viet Nam vets thank them for their sacrifices because few did when they came home.
