I am in my 60's and have suffered from constipation all my life. I remember as a kid, my mother would give me an enema on a regular basis due to my constipation. I hated the rubber pouch filled with water and trying to hold it as long as possible before rushing to the bathroom trying to make it in time, without having an accident. My adult years saw no relief from the constipation. Years of not being able to have a bowel movement, and straining to pass a very small amount, and more enemas. Finally I saw a doctor who preformed a colonoscopy. He said I had a very long and redundant colon. That means instead of my colon going up, over, and down, it loops back and forth as it goes up, over, and down. The endoscope he used was not long enough to reach the end of my colon. He said he was unable to see the last few inches as my colon was so long. The doctor said because my colon is so long, the stool remains in it so long, it dries out, becomes hard and is difficult to pass. He recommended eating more fiber and Metamucil. I tried that and it helped for a while. But eventually, the Metamucil quit working. I then tried stool softeners. They worked for a while, but they too quit working and the constipation returned. Finally I recalled that for the colonoscopy cleanout, the doctor had me take an entire bottle of Miralax. I thought perhaps I should try some Miralax each day. The Miralax said it takes about 3 days to start working, but it worked great and still does, years later. There is no cramping like you get with the harsh laxatives. They force the colon to violently contract to push the stool along. Miralax works by drawing water into the colon to make it softer and easier to pass. Miralax was a game-changer for me; a true life saver. I no longer have any constipation at all. I take it daily. If I happen to miss a day, no problem, but don't miss too many days or the constipation will return. I cannot recommend Miralax highly enough. This is a great product!
