Lesson Learned - Less is More, Cleaner, Better
Read on -- Good packaging, sealed in heavy foil with a "creation date" and an "expiration date". Will the traps catch moths? Yes, they will; however, it will not solve your moth problem. It will just confirm that you have a moth problem. Also, the traps attract male moths, not the females. To solve the issue, you'll need to find and address the source of the problem in your home. I've always kept my home meticulously clean. How did I end up with moths? Hint: moths love natural fiber soft-goods. After buying and setting up the moth traps, I researched how to get rid of clothing moths without having to hire an exterminator. The traps were catching moths almost immediately which was good but I knew it wouldn't solve the problem. As was recommended in my research, I vacuumed every day with a powerful canister vacuum, using all attachments - Carpeting, molding, walls, drapes were all vacuumed. Everything was being cleaned carefully. Then, I found the source of the problem in the bedroom - an expensive, beautiful, 100% pure linen, dust ruffle for my bed that I had ordered from Europe months ago. It was an exquisite heavy linen. A moths dream-world. Over time, there was a whole colony of them living deep in the gathering and folds throughout. I carefully removed the dust ruffle, put it outside, and then came back in and vacuumed, vacuumed, vacuumed some more. I washed everything possible. I got rid of all feather pillows, a down comforter, clothes that I don't wear, leather items that I don't use - all things that moths infest, all triple bagged, sealed, and put in the garbage. After each vacuuming, I removed the vacuum cleaner bag, triple wrapped it, and took it outside to the garbage. It was a 5 day cleaning project (full-time). Velvet coats and dresses were checked for damage (none), dry cleaned, and placed in sealed plastic garment bags. Leather shoes are now in sealed plastic containers. The moths are virtually gone. I've left out clean moth traps and finally there are no moths in the traps. The problem is solved. I have not replaced the dust ruffle and I don't intend to. I have a different mindset. No more accumulation of beautiful (and expensive) things, especially soft-goods. With less things, air circulates better in the closet and in the bedroom. There is less dust and work. I can find things easier. It's a cleaner, much better way to live and a lesson taught by the moths!
